Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible co-executive director Leah Greenberg released the following statement on Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s decision to formally leave the Democratic party:
“Sinema’s re-election chances were already extremely slim. She has abysmally low approval ratings among Arizona voters of every party. This is another cynical move to prolong her career. It's not going to work.
“Folks hailing this as a savvy, smart move that will save Sinema have not been following the politics of Arizona. Sinema has negative approval ratings with Democrats, Republicans and independents and literally every demographic group in the state. Her problem isn’t that her beliefs don’t fit neatly into either party—it’s that she has no real beliefs.
“Indivisible has a deep history with Senator Sinema. Sinema won office in 2018 due in no small part to the sweat and strategy of Arizona Indivisibles who were determined to defeat a Trump lackey. Alongside Arizona’s powerful coalition of grassroots organizations, they helped put even the reddest corners of the state in play for Democrats.. In Sinema, they expected they’d have a senator they didn’t always agree with -- but they expected a Democrat, and one who’d listen to her constituents.
“It turned out Sinema’s constituents were never really Arizona voters. Sinema’s constituents are Big Pharma and private equity. That’s why our goal is not to beat her. She was already going to lose. Our goal will be to make sure she becomes a political cautionary tale.”
