Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy for Indivisible, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court issued is final decisions of its session:
“Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ended its term by massacring what was left of the Voting Rights Act, leaving voters whose constitutional right to vote have been attacked by Republican legislatures and secretaries of state even fewer avenues for relief. While the rest of the term may have been what other legal observers might call ‘a mixed bag,’ but that I would call a chaotic rollercoaster of bizarre lineups and questionable legal analysis, today’s decision in Brnovich v. DNC demonstrates the central project of the Supreme Court under the direction of Chief Justice John Roberts: to help Republicans stay in power by destroying the ability for most people to participate in our democracy. Having already gutted the Voting Rights Act once before, Roberts and is conservative colleagues couldn’t say no to finishing the job today.
“And this won’t stop until Democrats take action. We need to get rid of the filibuster. We need to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. And then, to protect those critical pieces of legislation, we must add seats to the Supreme Court and cut off Roberts’s ability to destroy our democracy. Today’s decision only adds to the urgency for Congress to move quickly to rebalance the courts by moving quickly to pass the Judiciary Act of 2021, a bill that would restore balance and fairness in our judicial system by adding seats to the Supreme Court. Our democracy depends on it.”
