Washington, DC — The Indivisible Project’s policy director Angel Padilla released the following statement in opposition to the border deal:
“The original Indivisible Guide says that ‘an attack on one is an attack on all’ — and we mean it. Trump has gone after a number of communities, but he’s had an obsession with terrorizing immigrants, and fundamentally believes his path to a second term is on the backs of immigrant families. That’s why we have a moral responsibility to stand with immigrants who would suffer from this deal.
“As a member of the Defund Hate Coalition — whose goal is to seek cuts to those agencies that are separating families at the border and in our communities — it would betray our values to support this bill. We understand that we don’t control the White House or the Senate and so cuts would have been tough to get. But this deal represents a dramatic expansion in resources to those agencies. That is unacceptable — especially when Democrats control the House. This is a bad deal that will strengthen Trump’s deportation machine, leading to more families being torn apart, and more deaths in detention and along the border.
“Given the clear harm contained in this deal, we oppose this deal.”
