Washington, DC—Today, the Indivisible Project’s National Policy Director Angel Padilla released the following statement:
“The Trump Administration has announced a proposed regulation that would punish immigrant families for accessing government services for which they are eligible. It is an attack on immigrants. It is an attack on the poor. It is an attack on all American communities.
“The proposed ‘public charge’ regulation is further proof that immigrants remain one of the most vulnerable groups under Trump — and the main target of Stephen Miller. The harm that will be caused by this rule cannot be overstated. It will create a chilling effect that could force parents to choose between healthcare for their families and being able to stay in the United States. It puts immigrants and the communities and economies they’re a part of at risk.
“The reason for this policy change is simple. It is intended to strike fear in the hearts of immigrants and their families, to convey the message that they are not welcome in Trump’s America. Stephen Miller hopes to scare immigrants further into the shadows, or into self-deporting. It is also an attempt to disenfranchise immigrants who might one day — if they’re not blocked — vote as US Citizens.
