In 2022, New York Republicans elected George Santos, who quickly became nationally renowned for having allegedly lied about nearly every aspect of his background. Santos told so many lies, it’s actually hard to keep up with them all. These fabrications ranged from superficial claims about his professional experience to more serious instances of fraud, including:
- Lying about where he went to high school and college
- Lying to collect unemployment benefits
- Lying to donors and committing campaign finance violations
- Lying about having worked on Wall Street
- Lying about founding an animal charity
- Lying about his grandmother being a holocaust victim
- Lying about having employees who died in the 2016 Pulse shooting
- Lying about being Jewish
…and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Santos’s record of fraud has triggered federal investigations, an indictment, and an ethics inquiry—but he still has his seat in Congress.
In early October, Santos was charged with Conspiracy, Wire Fraud, False Statements, Falsification of Records, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Credit Card Fraud. While these indictments will be resolved through the courts, it’s up to Members of Congress to uphold their own standards of ethics and integrity. This week, the House of Representatives has an opportunity to expel Santos to finally bring some accountability to this lying MAGA extremist.
